Odun Opa 2017: Flogging competition in Ipetu Ijesa

Odun Opa in Yoruba language means Flogging competition. It takes place annually in Ipetu Ijesa, Osun state, Southwest part of Nigeria.
This year’s edition takes place today 4th March 2017. Odun Opa is a festival where partakers get flogged without mercy. It is a festival where children, youths and chiefs in the community endure severe flogging during the yearly event.
It is an event in the community aimed at promoting peace and progress of the town.
The event is celebrated by the indigenes of the two quarters in Ipetu Ijesa namely Ifofin and Odo Ise, is heralded by a flogging contest and only the males are involved.
It baffles first-timers at the event  wondering if they were in dreamland when they see participants joyfully getting the cane on their backs and blood oozing out of wounds
