MANCHESTER UNITED DUG DEEP TO OVERCOME STUBBORN SAINTS IN THE EFL CUP FINALS

It was a typical football finals. Gripping, nail biting, exciting and action packed. The EFL Cup finals between Manchester United and Southampton  lived up to the billing and almost exceeded it as the Red Devils had to dig deep to come up with the win. It is Mourinho’s first major trophy for his new club.
Wembley was packed to the brim with over 85,000 fans of both clubs.  it was obvious from the start that it was going to be a spectacle. The usual confidence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic who predicted success was visible and he had the first say in the match when he scored a direct free kick resulting from Oriol Romeu foul on and the roar at Wembley was something else!
The Saints were actually playing the better football and putting their more illustrious opponents on the back foot. They had their chances but not good enough to trouble David De Gea. Just at the time of the Saints ascendancy, Manchester United showed their class and ruthlessness when Marcos Rojo and Jesse Lingard combined to make it two for Mourinho’s side.

Against the run of play, the Saints new golden boy, Manolo Gabbiadini made it 2-1 from a cross from James Ward to end the first half. It was a deserved goal and no one could have grumbled except the Red Devils fans!
The second half began with greater intensity from the Saints. They looked sharper and hungrier. It was as if the winds have been taken away from the wings of Manchester United. When Gabbiadini got his second in the 48thminute, it looked like Southampton was going to spoil the day for both Manchester United and their fans.

Zlatan- Game winner
However, just as in many other occasions this season; Manchester United’s big Swede pounced on a square ball into the box to score his second and the winner in the 87th minute to break thousands of hearts and sends many more into delirious celebrations as they held on for dear life to snub out all embers of threats from the inspired Saints.
